Colombian Term Limits

One of the quickest ways for a state to become stagnant is for a leader to stick around for years on end. Hearing about the Colombian Supreme Court’s decision to reject Uribe’s claim for a third term, therefore, is good news for Colombia. Uribe’s term is marked by the conflict against the FARC, the full realization of Plan Colombia, and a lot of social strife and conflict within the country, but also by a dramatic improvement in foreign investment and the overall security situation.

Whatever his legacy, Uribe’s stepping aside is good news for Colombia. The state will develop as Colombia and not as Uribe’s dictatorship.
